First edition, limited to 250 copies. A pioneering bibliography by Jane Quinby (1901-1965) of the first and early English and American editions of Beatrix Potter’s books published between 1901 (the first appearance of Peter Rabbit) and 1944 (the year after the author’s death). The check list gives full collations and descriptions of the volumes covered, and the work is illustrated with plates depicting different states of the endpapers. The four appendices are dedicated to manuscripts, letters, and drawings by Potter (the endpapers illustrate a previously-unpublished illustrated letter by Potter); Potter’s minor publications; and ephemera relating to Peter Rabbit. Quinby’s well-regarded work remains an important reference work on the subject, and the rarity of this first edition has led to a number of reprints by Ian Hodgkins & Company, Stroud (1983 and 1999) and Martino Publishing, Mansfield Centre, CT (2001 and 2005).
