His publishing experience and contacts enabled him to attract a remarkable group of writers, artists, photographers, and others to contribute to&nbsp;<em>Verve<\/em>, as can be seen in this \u2013 the second issue \u2013 which includes texts by Andr\u00e9 Gide, James Joyce (\u2018A Phoenix Park Nocturne\u2019, the final periodical appearance of an extract from&nbsp;<em>Finnegans Wake<\/em>&nbsp;to appear before the book\u2019s publication in 1939), Ernest Hemingway, Andr\u00e9 Malraux, and Paul Val\u00e9ry; original lithographs by Wassily Kandinski and Andr\u00e9 Masson; and photographs by Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Willy Maywald.&nbsp;<em>Verve<\/em>&nbsp;was issued in both French and English-language editions (in this issue the French texts were translated by Robert Sage, Dorothy Bussy, Stuart Gilbert,&nbsp;<em>et al<\/em>.), and it was distributed in Great Britain by the bookseller, art dealer, and publisher A. Zwemmer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This copy is from the library of John Maynard Keynes and his wife, the Anglo-Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova, and it seems likely that it would have been of interest to them due to the contributions by and about the artist Georges Braque (1882-1963) which form much of the content of this issue. The cover design is by Braque, the issue opens with a piece written by Braque (\u2018Reflections\u2019, p. 7), which is illustrated with an image of a bas-relief by the artist; three paintings by Braque \u2013 \u2018Woman with a Mandolin\u2019, \u2018The Beach\u2019, and \u2018Still-Life\u2019 \u2013 are reproduced as colour illustrations; and photographic portraits of Braque by Bill Brandt and Elliott, together with a view of Braque\u2019s studio by Brandt, are illustrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3106_02.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3106_02.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3106_02-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/3106_02-250x350.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynes appears to have first met Braque in the spring of 1920, when he, Vanessa Bell, and Duncan Grant (who were returning from a holiday in Italy) visited \u2018Picasso and Braque, some of whose paintings Vanessa tried (without success, at least initially [&#8230;]) to persuade Keynes to buy after they returned to London\u2019 (D.E. Moggridge,&nbsp;<em>Maynard Keynes: An Economist\u2019s Biography<\/em>&nbsp;(London and New York, 1992), p. 361). Keynes would buy his first piece by Braque in&nbsp;<em>c<\/em>. 1922-1923 (\u2018Cubist Design\u2019 painted in 1911), and some years later he purchased Braque\u2019s \u2018Reclining Nude\u2019 (1925) in 1937 \u2013 less than a year before this issue of&nbsp;<em>Verve<\/em>&nbsp;was published.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keynes\u2019s wife Lydia Lopokova \u2013 whom he had first met in 1918 and fallen in love with in late 1921 \u2013 probably first met Braque in Paris in 1924, when she was part of the company for&nbsp;<em>Les Soir\u00e9es de Paris<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>Les Soir\u00e9es de Paris&nbsp;<\/em>was a season of eight ballets which included&nbsp;<em>Salade<\/em>, with music by Darius Milhaud and designs (both costumes and sets) by Braque. In a letter to Keynes of 15 May 1924, Lopokova wrote \u2018[t]he ballet&nbsp;<em>Salade<\/em>, now I like it is with singing, music is stirring and the d\u00e9cor of Braque very attractive\u2019&nbsp;(P. Hill and R. Keynes (ed.),&nbsp;<em>Lydia and Maynard. Letters between Lydia Lopokova and John Maynard Keynes<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 1989),&nbsp;p. 194).&nbsp;After John Maynard Keynes\u2019s death in 1946, this volume remained at Tilton House, Keynes\u2019s home in Sussex, until the death of his widow, Lydia Lopokova in 1981, when it was included in the list of books removed from Tilton House. The book then passed to John Maynard Keynes\u2019s nephew and godson&nbsp;Stephen Keynes&nbsp;(the son of the bibliographer Sir Geoffrey Keynes), who had, like his uncle, been educated at King\u2019s College, Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cf<\/em>.
