Researched and written over a period of five years,&nbsp;<em>Human Traces<\/em>&nbsp;was Faulks\u2019s seventh novel and, according to the author\u2019s website, it&nbsp;\u2018was, and remains, his most ambitious yet. Its theme is the nature of humanity: the make-up of our conscious minds and what it is that makes humans so perplexingly different from other creatures\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/3168_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10192\" style=\"width:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/3168_02.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/3168_02-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/3168_02-216x350.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the opinion of the psychiatrist Stephen McWilliams, \u2018[i]t is with exceptional clarity that&nbsp;Faulks describes schizophrenia, not simply its signs and symptoms, but the reactions of relatives and friends to an illness that will not be named until some thirty-five years later when Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler finally coins the term\u2019 (<em>Fiction &amp; Physicians: Medicine through the Eyes of Writers<\/em>&nbsp;(Dublin, 2012), p. 199), and he concludes that \u2018<em>Human Traces<\/em>&nbsp;is a gripping story of two doctors whose fiery paths cross during the birth of an entire profession.
