Willis has suggested that it<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2018must have been one of Leonard Woolf\u2019s aims to use the Living Poets series to correct a serious imbalance in favor of Oxford\u2019s undergraduates. Blackwell had for years published an annual anthology of Oxford undergraduate verse, but no established publisher had espoused the Cambridge poets. In addition to all of their older Cambridge associations, Leonard and Virginia had more recent connections through Dadie Rylands and Julian Bell, Virginia\u2019s nephew. An annual anthology of Cambridge undergraduate poetry was congenial to the Woolfs, although it only lasted two years. But these were the years of a remarkably talented group of students\u2019<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(<em>Leonard and Virginia Woolf as Publishers: The Hogarth Press 1917-1941<\/em>&nbsp;(Charlottesville, VA, 1992),<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>p. 152). The first of these anthologies was&nbsp;<em>Cambridge Poetry 1929<\/em>, followed by the present volume in 1930 \u2013&nbsp;the thirteenth title to be issued in the&nbsp;\u2018Hogarth Living Poets\u2019 series edited by Dorothy Wellesley, which \u2018differ[ed] from the other series [of the Hogarth Press] in that they are collections of original poems rather than essays or discussions\u2019 (Woolmer,&nbsp;<em>The Hogarth Press<\/em>,&nbsp;p. xxxii).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_05.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_05.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_05-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_05-230x350.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the three editors and Julian Bell, the other contributors to\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry 1930<\/em>\u00a0were Lionel Birch, Jacob Bronowski, J.D. Cullen, John Davenport (who had co-edited\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry 1929<\/em>), Robin Fedden, Louis Le Breton, John Lehmann, Malcolm Lowry, K.A. Matthews, G.F. Noxon, J.M. Reeves, A.J. Rose, and Arthur Tillotson. Of these, Bell, Bronowski, Cullen, Davenport, Fedden, Lehmann, Matthews, Redgrave, Reeves, Davies, and Tillotson had all contributed to\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry 1929<\/em>, but this second anthology also attracted five new writers: Birch, Le Breton, Lowry, Noxon, and Rose. Malcolm Lowry\u2019s contribution was the poem \u2018For Nordahl Grieg Ship\u2019s Fireman\u2019 (pp. 47-49), which was the first appearance of any of his writings in book form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_06.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_06.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_06-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_06-222x350.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_03.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/3198_03-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While levelling out the abovementioned imbalance in Oxford and Cambridge poetry publications,\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry<\/em> inadvertently found itself at the crossroads of the rivalry between two literary Cambridge magazines:\u00a0<em>The Venture<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Experiment<\/em>.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The actor Michael Redgrave had co-founded\u00a0<em>The Venture<\/em>\u00a0soon after going up to Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied Medieval and Modern Languages and English, and its inaugural issue appeared in November 1928. \u2018When Redgrave had first conceived of\u00a0<em>The Venture\u00a0<\/em>there had been no outlet in Cambridge for undergraduate poetry and prose, with the exception of the rather donnish\u00a0<em>Cambridge Review<\/em>\u2019 (Jason Harding, \u2018\u201cExperiment\u201d in Cambridge\u2019,\u00a0<em>The Cambridge Quarterly\u00a0<\/em>27.4 (1998), pp. 287-309, at p. 297), which Redgrave also briefly edited in the Easter Term of 1929. As unanticipated as the rivalry with\u00a0<em>Experiment\u00a0<\/em>may have been, it came to a head around the time when\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry 1930<\/em>\u00a0was being prepared, as Redgrave, controversially, invited contributions from his\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry\u00a0<\/em>co-editors, including\u00a0<em>Experiment<\/em>\u00a0associate Davies, for the sixth and final issue of\u00a0<em>The Venture<\/em>. Apart from the co-editing\u00a0<em>Cambridge Poetry 1930<\/em>, Redgrave also contributed his poem \u2018Proteus and the Fountain\u2019 to the volume (pp. 54-58).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolmer states that&nbsp;<em>Cambridge Poetry 1930<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;published&nbsp;in May 1930 at 3<em>s&nbsp;<\/em>6<em>d<\/em>&nbsp;in an edition of 800 copies, of which 300 copies were later pulped. Intriguingly, the contemporary ownership inscription gives the acquisition date as March 1930 \u2013 that is two months prior to publication. Assuming that this date is correct, this copy not only pre-dates the official publication, but also adds to our understanding of the Hogarth Press\u2019 operations, indicating that the first copies of a title could be in hand weeks before the official publication. We have not been able to identify Charles Blackburn from historical records, but it seems possible that he was an undergraduate who knew Michael Redgrave and that Redgrave signed this copy for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Woolmer,&nbsp;<em>The Hogarth Press<\/em>, 219;
