Hammond and Anderson, B12). In 1929 &#8211; some years after starting work on the subject and three years after he took up his professorship in Oxford &#8211; Tolkien published an article on the subject, which his biographer described thus: \u2018Tolkien never lost his literary soul. [\u2026] He brought to [\u2026] his subject a grace of expression and a sense of the larger significance of the matter. Nowhere is this demonstrated to better advantage than in his article (published in 1929) on the Ancrene Wisse, a medieval book of instruction for a group of anchorites, which probably originated in the West Midlands. By a remarkable and subtle piece of scholarship, Tolkien showed that the language of two important manuscripts [\u2026] was no mere unpolished dialect, but a literary language, with an unbroken literary tradition going back to before the Conquest\u2019 \u2013 the so-called \u2018AB language\u2019 of the West Midlands (Humphrey Carpenter, <em>Tolkien: A Biography<\/em> (London, 1977), p. 134).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ancrene Wisse<\/em>, Tolkien\u2019s edition of the source manuscript, MS Corpus Christi College Cambridge 402,&nbsp;was even longer in the making than&nbsp;\u2018<em>Ancrene Wisse<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Hali Mei\u00f0had<\/em>\u2019 (1929),&nbsp;his seminal article on the subject. Tolkien is known to have mentioned the edition in correspondence as far back as 1936, and in a letter to Stanley&nbsp;Unwin of March 1945, he described the book as \u2018all typed out\u2019 \u2013 probably, as Hammond and Anderson conjecture, only referring to the MS text proper. In 1952 Tolkien called this his \u2018overdue professional work, which he was attempting to finish in the midst of other writing and with&nbsp;<em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em>, soon to be published, distracting his attention\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"566\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3207_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3207_01.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3207_01-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3207_01-216x350.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The years passed until \u2018Robert Burchfield, [\u2026] the editorial secretary of the [Early English Text Society], \u201cgently bullied\u201d Tolkien until the typescript was submitted \u2013 which, in the event, was not merely a typescript, but included initial letters elegantly drawn by Tolkien. [\u2026] A printers\u2019 strike prevented proofs from being sent to Tolkien until June 1960, when he was \u201cin full tide of composition for the\u00a0<em>Silmarillion<\/em>, and had lost the threads of the M[iddle] E[nglish] work\u201d (letter to Rayner Unwin, 31 July 1960)\u2019 (Hammond and Anderson). Further delays meant that Tolkien likely did not correct the final proofs until January 1962, and on \u201819 December 1962, in a letter to his son Michael, he reported that \u201cmy\u00a0<em>Ancrene Wisse<\/em>\u00a0\u2026 got between covers this week at last\u201d\u2019 (<em>loc. cit<\/em>.). Thus, entirely inadvertently,\u00a0<em>Ancrene Wisse<\/em>\u00a0was one of Tolkien\u2019s few academic publications after 1940.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W.G. Hammond and D.A. Anderson,&nbsp;<em>J.R.R.
