This \u2018Secret File No. 3\u2019 was followed by<em>&nbsp;Horse Under Water&nbsp;<\/em>(1963).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Len Deighton (b. 1929) had served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, gathering experiences that would influence his writing significantly. Before becoming a writer, he trained at St Martin\u2019s School of Art and the Royal College of Art to become, alongside other jobs, a successful commercial artist in London and New York. He started to write his first novel,&nbsp;<em>The Ipcress File<\/em>, \u2018as a lark on vacation in France in 1960\u2019, and it was published following a \u2018chance conversation with a literary agent\u2019 two years later (\u2018Len Deighton\u2019, EBSCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3230_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3230_03.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3230_03-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/3230_03-242x350.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1966&nbsp;<em>Life<\/em>&nbsp;magazine described the 37-year-old Deighton \u2018currently the hottest author in Britain, to be geographically modest\u2019, whose&nbsp;<em>Funeral in Berlin<\/em>&nbsp;had \u2018remained on the best-seller list of the New York&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;for 20 weeks during the first half of 1965.&nbsp;<em>Funeral<\/em>&nbsp;is Deighton at his best\u2019 (Hugh Moffett, \u2018Spy Writer on the Lam\u2019,&nbsp;<em>Life<\/em>, 25 March 1966, pp. 85-97, at p. 86). Indeed, together with&nbsp;<em>Yesterday\u2019s Spy<\/em>&nbsp;(1965),&nbsp;<em>Funeral in Berlin<\/em>&nbsp;is considered \u2018the most successful of this series\u2019 of spy novels to this day. It is said that, \u2018[d]rawing upon a tradition of realistic spy fiction pioneered by writers W. Somerset Maugham, Eric Ambler, and Greene, Deighton and his contemporary John le Carr\u00e9 have revolutionized the genre\u2019 (EBSCO). (Interestingly, the quote from the&nbsp;<em>New Statesman<\/em>&nbsp;on the dustwrapper misspells Greene\u2019s name, stating that \u2018[t]here has been no brighter arrival on the shady scene since Graham Green [sic] started entertaining\u2019.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film version of&nbsp;<em>Funeral in Berlin<\/em>&nbsp;was produced by James Bond film producer Harry Saltzman in 1966, starring Michael Caine in the lead role. In this and all other film adaptations of Deighton\u2019s spy novels from this series, the (anti-)hero spy is named \u2018Harry Palmer\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first edition of&nbsp;<em>Funeral in Berlin<\/em>&nbsp;was published in September 1964 in an edition of 14,000 copies (<em>cf.&nbsp;<\/em>Martin Breese,&nbsp;<em>Breese\u2019s Guide to Modern First Editions<\/em>&nbsp;(London 1993), p. 108).
