Printed in Chaucer type in red and black.&nbsp;4 full wood-engraved borders and&nbsp;three- and six-line wood-engraved initials, all after Morris. (Very faint light marking at lower margin of some ll.) Original holland-backed boards [by J. &amp; J. Leighton], upper board titled in black and with two flower ornaments. (Very light marking on boards, extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, short splits on spine.) Sparling wrote that William Morris had found&nbsp;L. Moland and C. d\u2019H\u00e9ricault\u2019s edition of&nbsp;<em>Nouvelles fran\u00e7aises en prose de xiii<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle publi\u00e9es d\u2019apr\u00e8s les manuscrits<\/em>&nbsp;(Paris, 1856) \u2018from its first appearance [&#8230;] a familiar friend and a source of inspiration\u2019 (H.H. Sparling,&nbsp;<em>The Kelmscott Press and William Morris Master-Craftsman<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 1924), p. 108), while Mackail states that it \u2018had for thirty years been one of the treasures of literature to him. Together with the \u201cViolier des Histoires Romaines,\u201d which appeared in the same series two years later, it had been among the first sources of his knowledge of the French romance of the Middle Ages\u2019 (J.W. Mackail,&nbsp;<em>The Life of William Morris<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 1899), II, p. 283)<em>.<\/em>&nbsp;Morris&nbsp;undertook a number of translations from&nbsp;<em>Nouvelles fran\u00e7aises en prose de xiii<sup>e<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle<\/em>, and&nbsp;four of these stories \u2013<em>The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane&nbsp;<\/em>(1893),&nbsp;<em>Of the Friendship of Amis and Amile<\/em>, and&nbsp;the two stories&nbsp;<em>The Tale of the Emperor Coustans and of Over Sea<\/em>&nbsp;(1894) \u2013 were published by the Kelmscott Press as a series of three volumes in a uniform sextodecimo format (this format was first used by Morris for&nbsp;<em>Gothic Architecture<\/em>&nbsp;in 1893)<em>.&nbsp;<\/em>These translations were later collected in one volume, which was published under the title&nbsp;<em>Old French Romances Done into English by William Morris<\/em>&nbsp;by George Allen in 1896.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_02.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_02-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_02-277x350.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane<\/em>,<em>&nbsp;<\/em>the first of these Kelmscott Press translations, was printed in an edition of 350 paper copies, and was evidently well received, since the print run was increased to 500 paper copies for&nbsp;<em>Of the Friendship of Amis and Amile<\/em>&nbsp;and remained at a similar level for&nbsp;<em>The Tale of the Emperor Coustans and of Over Sea<\/em>, the last of the three volumes in the series. The most substantial of the three volumes,&nbsp;<em>The Tale of the Emperor Coustans and of Over Sea<\/em>&nbsp;contains two stories, each with its own wood-engraved part-title giving the fuller titles \u2018The Tale of King Coustans Emperor of Byzance\u2019 and \u2018A Tale of Over Sea\u2019 (the latter also has a letterpress part-title). Interestingly, Sparling notes that \u2018[f]rom the story of the Emperor Coustans grew that of \u201cThe Man born to be King\u201d, one of the poems included in [Morris\u2019s]&nbsp;<em>The Earthly Paradise<\/em>\u2019 (<em>The Kelmscott Press and William Morris Master-Craftsman<\/em>, p. 108); similarly, Morris\u2019s poem \u2018Amys and Amillion\u2019, intended for&nbsp;<em>The Earthly Paradise<\/em>&nbsp;but eventually omitted, had been based on the text he translated as&nbsp;<em>Amis and Amile<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10788\" style=\"width:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_03.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_03-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3215_03-246x350.jpg 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Tale of the Emperor Coustans and of Over Sea<\/em>&nbsp;was completed on 30 August 1894, according to the colophon, and published on 26 September 1894 in an edition of 545 copies. 525 copies were printed on \u2018Perch\u2019 paper (as here) and priced at 7<em>s.&nbsp;<\/em>6<em>d<\/em>., and 20 copies were printed on vellum and priced at 2 guineas. This copy was acquired by the previous owner from Henry Sotheran Ltd, the longest-established active antiquarian bookseller in England, which counted William Morris among its clients (<em>cf<\/em>.
