The book is divided into nine sections comprising essays by a number of authors with complementary drawings collected at the end of each section, comprising: \u2018Fantasy in Costume\u2019 (Max Beerbohm); \u2018Historic or \u201cPeriod\u201d Costume\u2019 (Francis M. Kelly); \u2018Irish Dramatic Costume\u2019 (Lennox Robinson, Gerald Macnamara, and Samuel Leighton); \u2018Costume\u2019 (Sir Barry V. Jackson); \u2018Costume at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith\u2019 (Nigel Playfair, Amelia Defries, and Maria Pitt-Chatham); \u2018Revue\u2019 (Charles B. Cochran); \u2018Costume in Opera\u2019 (Marguerite d\u2019Alvarez); \u2018Costume for Ballet\u2019 (Cyril W. Beaumont, James Laver, and Edith Carlyon); and \u2018The Artist in the Dressing Room\u2019 (Horace Shipp).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_03.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_03-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_03-481x350.jpg 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older artists who contributed to&nbsp;<em>The Robes of Thespis<\/em>&nbsp;were&nbsp;some of the best-known British designers and artists of the era \u2013 the cover design is by Edward Gordon Craig, internationally recognised as one of the pre-eminent scenographers and costume designers of the early twentieth century \u2013 and some of their drawings were commissioned for the book by Mason. In his preface Mason explains that he wishes to use the volume and the proceeds from its sale to promote the careers of a new generation of young, unknown costume designers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_06.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10877\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_06.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_06-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_06-246x350.jpg 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Robes of Thespis<\/em>&nbsp;was generally well received at the time of publication, and one reviewer wrote that it was a book of \u2018fine format, excellent essays, and perfect plates\u2019 and concluded that \u2018[m]uch applause is due to Mr. Rupert Mason. There can be nothing but praise for the volume of his fashioning and for the philanthropy that brought it into beautiful being\u2019 (<em>The Illustrated London News<\/em>, 14 January 1928, p. 46). It remains an important and useful reference both for the artists and the theatre of the era, and Kesler praises the \u2018excellent color reproductions of the costume designs for varying genres during the first quarter of the twentieth century [&#8230;]\u2019 and commends it as a \u2018good source\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_10.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_10-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3245_10-294x350.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Robes of Thespis<\/em>&nbsp;was published in both a trade edition at \u00a38 8<em>s<\/em>. and a specially bound edition limited to only 25 copies (the present copy), which was printed on hand-made paper and includes two additional colour-printed plates which are not present in the trade edition: Prince&nbsp;Nicholas Galitzine\u2019s \u2018A Ballet Scene in Revue\u2019 and \u2018A Babylonian Oasis\u2019 (plates 110 and 111, respectively).&nbsp;This copy is from the library of David Summers, who was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford.
