London: The Alden Press for Jonathan Cape, 1963.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Octavo (188 x 120mm), pp. 288. (Light spotting on edges of bookblock, l. B10 lightly creased.) Modern black crushed morocco backed cloth, spine divided into compartments by silver rules and lettered directly in one, black endpapers, upper and lower pastedowns with \u2018ski-track\u2019 motif in silver. A very good copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"872\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2428_01_cutout.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2289\" style=\"width:325px;height:568px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2428_01_cutout.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2428_01_cutout-350x610.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2428_01_cutout-172x300.jpg 172w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2428_01_cutout-201x350.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First edition.<\/strong>\u00a0<em>On Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service<\/em>\u00a0was Fleming\u2019s eleventh James Bond book: \u2018[a]fter the relative disappointment of\u00a0<em>The Spy Who Loved Me<\/em>, Ian Fleming made a concerted effort to produce another James Bond novel adhering to the tried and tested formula, which was exactly what happened, being peppered with nods to his past glories. The reappearance of Blofeld and SPECTRE links the story with\u00a0<em>Thunderball<\/em>, the last traditional Bond episode before the experimental novel, and we are reintroduced to the Deuxi\u00e8me Bureau headed by Ren\u00e9 Mathis. In Tracy, we find Fleming&#8217;s most complex heroine since Vesper Lynd of\u00a0<em>Casino Royale<\/em>, whose resting place is mentioned herein. Indeed, the opening scenes occur in and around Royale-les-Eaux and its famous casino, which was the setting for the earlier epic encounter with Le Chiffre, and Bond\u2019s old enemy SMERSH; his memorable foe, up until\u00a0<em>From Russia, With Love<\/em>, is mentioned several times here. Bond\u2019s father-in-law Draco reminds us of 007\u2019s avuncular ally Darko in\u00a0<em>From Russia, With Love<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 even the names are virtually the same; and Irma Bunt is vaguely reminiscent of Rosa Klebb, both in name and hideousness. For a good period of the story James Bond needs to assume an alias, which was the case in most of the early novels including\u00a0<em>Live and Let Die<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Dr No<\/em>\u00a0(as Mr Bryce),\u00a0<em>Moonraker<\/em>\u00a0(as Detective Sgt James),\u00a0<em>Diamonds are Forever<\/em>\u00a0(as Peter Franks) and\u00a0<em>From Russia, With Love<\/em>\u00a0(as David Somerset). Towards the end of the novel, Tracy accuses Bond of selfishness \u201cthe way you go on playing Red Indians\u201d, which was another explicit reference to\u00a0<em>Casino Royale<\/em>\u2019 (Gilbert, p. 351).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilbert notes that 44,625 copies of the first edition were bound for publication.
