Collotype portrait frontispiece, 2 illustrations after Williamson in the text, Williamson\u2019s wood-engraved owl device on final p. (A few light marginal spots or marks.) Original vellum-backed green cloth boards, upper board with Williamson\u2019s owl device in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut&nbsp;and retaining all deckles, upper flap from dustwrapper pasted onto upper pastedown, lower flap loosely inserted, modern dark green cloth slipcase. (Some slight fading on boards, spine slightly discoloured and bumped at foot.) A very good copy.&nbsp;<em>Provenance<\/em>: G.A. It<em>&nbsp;<\/em>is divided into two sections: \u2018The Spirit of the Village: Winter and Spring\u2019 and \u2018Air and Light of the Fields and the Sea: Winter and Spring\u2019. Several of the stories had been previously published elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The long [story]&nbsp;<em>First Day of Spring<\/em>&nbsp;which appears in <em>The Village Book<\/em> was submitted to Desmond McCarthy, editor of&nbsp;<em>Life and Letters<\/em>, under the pseudonym of John Barrowquail, accompanied by a letter which expressed the hope that the Editor would recognise original work and publish it. It shared the fate of the manuscript sent to another Editor [&#8230;] and the inscribed copies of&nbsp;<em>Dandelion Days<\/em>&nbsp;[&#8230;] sent to the late A.B. Walkley and the late Sir Edmund Gosse\u2019 (Girvan) \u2013 i.e. its receipt by McCarthy was never acknowledged, and hence it is uncertain whether it ever arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4300\" style=\"width:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_01.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_01-350x257.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_01-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_01-477x350.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The original<em>&nbsp;<\/em>contract [with Jonathan Cape] for the book is dated 1 June 1928, with a provisional title of \u201cLIFE IN A WEST COUNTRY VILLAGE\u201d\u2019 (Henry Williamson Society website), but Williamson missed the submission date at the end of the same month, and it would take two more years for the book to be published. The trade issue of the first edition of&nbsp;<em>The Village Book<\/em>&nbsp;\u2018consisted of between 2,000 and 3,000 copies\u2019 (Girvan), and was published simultaneously with this limited signed edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_03.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_03-350x542.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_03-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2601_03-226x350.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williamson\u2019s book was generally very well received by the critics; indeed, the publication was so successful that, in 1945, most of the stories from both&nbsp;<em>The Village Book<\/em>&nbsp;and its successor,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/13\/williamson-labouring-life\/\">The Labouring Life<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(1932), were rearranged and revised to form the compilations published as&nbsp;<em>Tales of a Devon Village<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Life in a Devon Village<\/em>&nbsp;by Faber and Faber Limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I.
