Frederic Manning suffered from asthma throughout his life and was consequently mainly educated at home, and as a teenager he&nbsp;\u2018formed a close intellectual friendship with&nbsp;Arthur Galton [&#8230;], a scholarly Englishman who had moved to Sydney as secretary to the governor\u2019 (ODNB). Manning visited England with Galton in 1898, remaining until 1900, and returned in 1903 to take lodgings with Galton, who had been appointed vicar of Edenham, Lincolnshire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In England, Manning became part of contemporary literary and artistic circles, and counted&nbsp;Max Beerbohm,&nbsp;William Rothenstein,&nbsp;Ezra Pound,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Richard Aldington&nbsp;among his friends \u2013 indeed, Pound later said that Manning \u2018whom he always highly esteemed, had been his first literary companion in England\u2019 (<em>op. cit<\/em>.). Manning\u2019s first books \u2013 the verse monologue&nbsp;<em>The Vigil of Brunhild <\/em>(1907) and<em> Scenes &amp; Portraits<\/em>&nbsp;(1909) \u2013 \u2018were well received by a small, discriminating readership. [&#8230;] Manning began to be talked of as an outstanding new talent\u2019 (<em>op. cit.<\/em>). A collection of poetry followed, and then military service during World War I, first as a private (seeing service at the Somme) and then as an officer, but heavy drinking and mental health issues led to his resignation in 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_02.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_02-350x585.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_02-180x300.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_02-210x350.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the postwar era Manning continued to write, but Galton\u2019s death in 1921 had deprived Manning of an anchor and \u2018without a mentor he seemed likely to drift, until in 1929 the publisher&nbsp;Peter Davies&nbsp;persuaded him to write a short novel about the western front. The market for war books was suddenly opening up; urged on by&nbsp;Davies, who allowed no opportunity for revisions,&nbsp;Manning&nbsp;worked fast. Unlike most other authors of the time, he wrote about the troops, using their normal language.&nbsp;<em>The Middle Parts of Fortune<\/em>&nbsp;appeared anonymously in a small, private edition in 1929 [&#8230;]. The expurgated version,&nbsp;<em>Her Privates We<\/em>, by&nbsp;Private 19022, was published by&nbsp;Davies&nbsp;in 1930\u2019 (<em>op. cit<\/em>.). As Sir William Rothenstein wrote,&nbsp;Manning\u2019s&nbsp;friend&nbsp;T. E. Lawrence&nbsp;\u2018knew [&#8230;]&nbsp;<em>Scenes &amp; Portraits <\/em>almost by heart. Like Max Beerbohm, he thought this book contained the strongest and subtlest prose of recent times\u2019 (A.W. Lawrence (ed.),<em> T.E. Lawrence by his Friends <\/em>(London, 1937), p. 287) and he identified the anonymous&nbsp;author as the writer of&nbsp;Scenes &amp; Portraits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_03.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_03-350x269.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/2633_03-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assisted by Lawrence\u2019s praise, Manning\u2019s book became a bestseller and Peter Davies reissued&nbsp;<em>Scenes &amp; Portraits, \u2018<\/em>a collection of debates \u2013 ironic, elegant, inconclusive \u2013 about religion in different periods of society\u2019 (ODNB) in a revised and enlarged form for a new readership. This enlarged edition added \u2018Apologia Dei\u2019, a new piece which was dedicated to Lawrence (under his pseudonym \u2018T.E.
