The Lincoln Co-operative Society \u2018began business in a humble way at No. 1, Napoleon Place, on July 17<sup>th<\/sup>, 1861\u2019 (p. 27) and soon established itself in the city, before expanding into the county with the foundation of branches at Welbourne, Owmby, Metheringham, Saxilby, Bardney, Horncastle, Sleaford, Market Rasen, Bassingham, Reepham, and Hackthorne. As the nineteenth century progressed, the Society broadened its aims, and McInnes devotes chapters to \u2018Housing of Members Begun, 1883\u2019, \u2018Corn Milling Begun, 1886\u2019, Free School Lane Extensions, 1888\u2019, \u2018Farming Begun, 1889\u2019, \u2018The Educational Department and Women\u2019s Guild\u2019, and \u2018The Building Department\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2242_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2242_02.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2242_02-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2242_02-231x350.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter XIII, \u2018Conclusion\u2019, outlines the successes of the Society in a number of fields (while noting some setbacks and moribund periods), and closes with these words: \u2018[the Society] is continually shedding the lustre of its intelligence and conferring its many benefits and advantages upon the struggling poor in the villages, where its borders are constantly being enlarged. Let us hope, then, that in the days to come the Society may continue to be actuated by this excellent spirit, which is promoting solidarity in the highest and best sense, and that it may never descend so low as to make mere materialism its god or to dissociate wealth from responsibility\u2019 (p. 131). The final two chapters provide a \u2018List of Presidents, Treasurers, and Secretaries from 1861 till 1910\u2019 and \u2018Statistics\u2019, which records the growth of the Society in five tables showing membership, capital, branches, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>History of Co-operation in Lincoln 1861-1911&nbsp;<\/em>is richly illustrated and documents the Society\u2019s buildings in Lincolnshire at the beginning of the twentieth century, many of which remain but have passed into new ownership (such as the Newport Arch branch, which is now a restaurant).
