(Lightly spotted, album leaf slightly creased at edges).&nbsp;<em>Provenance<\/em>: ink number \u20187\u2019 in an early hand on the margin of the print \u2013 [?]late 19th-century pencil note \u2018Alma Mater \/ Oxford\u2019 on album leaf \u2013&nbsp;<strong>Stephen John Keynes OBE, FLS<\/strong>&nbsp;(1927-2017).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2625_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2625_01.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2625_01-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/2625_01-299x350.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second of two states.&nbsp;The painter and engraver William Hogarth&nbsp;(1697-1764), was unable to study at university or train in a profession due to the debts his father accrued in failed attempts to publish Latin and Greek textbooks and establish a Latin-speaking coffeehouse in London. Therefore, Hogarth was apprenticed to the silver-plate engraver Ellis Gamble from&nbsp;<em>circa<\/em>&nbsp;1714 onwards and in 1720 he set up as a copper-engraver, the same year in which he enrolled at the St Martin\u2019s Lane Academy. In 1724 Hogarth joined James Thornhill\u2019s drawing school in Covent Garden and his marriage to Thornhill\u2019s daughter Jane in 1729 opened up new commissions and opportunities for him. In the early 1730s he had much success as a painter of conversation pieces, and also developed his \u2018modern moral subjects\u2019 \u2013 \u2018pictorial narratives of contemporary-life subjects in series\u2019 (ODNB) \u2013 which famously included&nbsp;<em>A Harlot\u2019s Progress<\/em>&nbsp;(the engravings of the paintings published by subscription in 1732) and&nbsp;<em>A Rake\u2019s Progress<\/em>&nbsp;(completed 1734). Originally published on 20 January 1736 at a price of six pence, this second state appeared six weeks later on 3 March at the same price, clearly printing for the first time the title \u2018Datur Vacuum\u2019 on the opened book in the print (this had been invisible in the first state and was often added by Hogarth in ink). Paulson explains in&nbsp;<em>Hogarth\u2019s Graphic Works<\/em>: \u2018Datur vacuum\u2019 (\u2018Leisure time is given for&#8230;\u2019) is a pun on \u2018vacuum\u2019, carried out in the expressions of the various auditors. These are scholars at Oxford, wearing square-topped, round cloth, and felt hats. [&#8230;] The reader is supposed to be William Fisher (d. 1761) of Jesus College, Oxford, Registrar of the University (who agreed to be drawn by Hogarth [&#8230;])\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Scholars at a Lecture\u2019 would be one of four \u2018Etchings of different Characters of Heads in Groups\u2019 published together in the following year, 1737, as \u2018Four Groups of Heads\u2019, which were considered \u2018caricatures\u2019 by Hogarth\u2019s contemporaries; the other three engravings in the group were \u2018A Chorus of Singers\u2019, \u2018The Laughing Audience\u2019, and \u2018The Company of Undertakers\u2019 or \u2018Consultation of Quacks\u2019 (Paulson,&nbsp;<em>Hogarth: High Art and Low, 1732-1750<\/em>&nbsp;(Cambridge, 1992), pp. 122-123).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This example is from the collection of the noted bibliophile Stephen Keynes, a great-grandson of Charles Darwin and a member of the Roxburghe Club, who assembled extensive collections which were particularly rich in prints, illuminated manuscripts, and printed books.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BM,&nbsp;<em>Political and Personal Satires<\/em>, no. 2338; Paulson,&nbsp;<em>Hogarth\u2019s Graphic Works<\/em>&nbsp;(1989), no. 143.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SOLD<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":4569,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[108,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4558","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hogarth","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>William Hogarth: Scholars at Lecture (Alma Mater), 1736.
