(Occasional light spotting or marking, small marginal tears or paper-flaws on ll. Z5 and 2B8.) Original blue cloth gilt, upper board with upper border of gilt palmette band and lower border of blind rules and dots, lower board with publisher\u2019s device in blind, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in gilt and blind, top edges gilt. (Light offsetting on endpapers, some light marking, extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, slight cracking on upper hinge.) The stories collected here&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;\u2018The Bridge-Builders\u2019, \u2018A Walking Delegate\u2019, \u2018The Ship that Found Herself\u2019, \u2018The Tomb of his Ancestors\u2019, \u2018The Devil and the Deep Sea\u2019, \u2018William the Conqueror\u2019, \u2018.007\u2019, \u2018The Maltese Cat\u2019, \u2018\u201cBread upon the Waters\u201d\u2019, \u2018An Error in the Fourth Dimension\u2019, \u2018My Sunday at Home\u2019, and \u2018The Brushwood Boy\u2019 \u2013 had all been&nbsp;published in magazines between late 1893 and December 1897, and the book was first published in the United States in 1898.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2660_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2660_01.jpg 295w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2660_01-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2660_01-223x350.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The present, English edition appeared in September 1898, and \u2018[t]he English edition was set up from the corrected proofs of the American edition; but the proofs were corrected a second time for the English edition, and a comparison shows many changes.
