Vol. XXXIX , New Series Vol. XVII, Nos 1-6 (November 1889-April 1890), pp. 74-83.&nbsp;New York and London: The De Vinne Press for The Century Co. and T. Fisher Unwin,&nbsp;1890.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6 numbers bound in one volume, octavo in 4s (241 x 161mm), pp. [i]-viii (volume title, imprint, index), 3-160, 163-320, 323-380, 483-640, 643-800, 803-960. 6 frontispieces, numerous illustrations in the text, some full-page, including 6 by Daniel Carter Beard to illustrate \u2018A Connecticut Yankee\u2019. (Occasional light spotting or marking.) Original full green cloth over bevelled boards, boards blocked in blind with elaborate strapwork design, spine blocked in blind with elaborate design and lettered in gilt, all edges speckled red. (Endpapers lightly spotted, extremities a little rubbed and scuffed.) A final typescript was prepared in April 1889, which Twain revised over the summer of that year, discovering a number of errors and unauthorised amendments, which had been introduced by the typist, in the process. Some of these were then corrected by the publisher, Frederick J. Hall, as the book was typeset, but a significant number escaped detection and persisted into the published text.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-498\" style=\"width:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_03.jpg 555w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_03-350x528.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_03-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_03-232x350.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, as book was being typeset, \u2018Twain selected four excerpts from his story for publication in the November 1889 <i>Century Magazine<\/i>. He arranged for a second typescript to be made from the first, revised that typescript and supplied new passages to connect the excerpts. While most of the changes in these selections were made strictly for the sake of magazine publication, some dozen revisions were literary improvements which, because of Hall\u2019s production schedule, Mark Twain could not incorporate in the book\u2019 (M. Twain, <i>A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\u2019s Court<\/i>, edited by Bernard L. Stein (Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1983), p. 478). The text published here appears not to have been published elsewhere, but was drawn upon by Stein when he was preparing his authoritative text published in University of California Press\u2019 edition of the works of Twain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"846\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-500\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01.jpg 846w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01-350x240.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/2169_01-510x350.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The six images which illustrate Twain\u2019s story in the <i>Century Magazine<\/i> also mark the beginning of Twain\u2019s creative partnership with Dan Beard, who would become \u2018Twain\u2019s favorite and most frequently chosen illustrator. [&#8230;] Always interested in both the pictorial and in collaborative projects, Twain found a marriage of both in his synergistic work with Dan Beard. At once a partner, a friend, and an inspiration, Dan Beard\u2019s art and influence helped Twain produce some of his most memorable and impactful pieces as well as to reconsider the role of illustration in his texts\u2019 (K.E. Bishop \u2018Illustrating Mark Twain: Daniel Carter Beard and His Influences\u2019 in <i>The Mark Twain Annual<\/i>, vol. 10 (2012), p. 109). <i>A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\u2019s Court<\/i> was the first of Twain\u2019s work that Beard illustrated, and Twain \u2013 who had frequently been disappointed by previous illustrators \u2013 praised Beard\u2019s work with the words, \u2018[h]old me under permanent obligations. What luck it was to find you! There are hundreds of artists that could illustrate any other book of mine, but there was only one who could illustrate this one. Yes, it was a fortunate hour that I went netting for lightning bugs and caught a meteor. Live forever!\u2019 (quoted in A.B.
