Beginning in Bombay in the fifties, moving to London in the sixties, and New York for the last quarter century, the novel pulsates with a half-century of music and celebrates the power of rock \u2019n\u2019 roll\u2019 (www.salmanrushdie.com).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hermione Lee considered&nbsp;<em>The Ground Beneath her Feet&nbsp;<\/em>\u2018part rock-opera, part Indo-classical myth, part love-story, part surreal space-fiction, part seismological meditation\u2019, concluding: \u2018[w]e have to create our own alternative universes, our own answers to what \u201cshouldn\u2019t be this way\u201d: in this case, out of music, and love. It is a great late twentieth century humanist message, arrived at out of a fierce awareness of loss, pain, fear and grief\u2019 (<em>The Guardian<\/em>, 28 March 1999). While not shortlisted for the 1999 Booker Prize,&nbsp;<em>The Ground Beneath her Feet<\/em>&nbsp;won the Eurasian section of the Commonwealth Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2716_01.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2716_01.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2716_01-234x300.jpeg 234w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/2716_01-273x350.jpeg 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proof copies of this title are much scarcer than the first edition, and this proof \u2013 with&nbsp;a draft blurb and information about the provisional price and publication details on the rear wrapper \u2013&nbsp;shows some variations from the final publication. For example, neither the entry&nbsp;\u2018Acknowledgements\u2019 listed in the contents nor the pages set aside for them (pp. [577]-578) appear in the published version, but acknowledgements for the lyrics quoted in the text are added to the verso of the title-page in the published text, while the dedication changes from \u2018For Milan Rushdie\u2019 to \u2018For Milan\u2019 in the published text. Similarly, the upper panel of the dustwrapper of the first edition would combine the neon harp from the proof\u2019s upper wrapper and the neon author\u2019s name from the proof\u2019s lower wrapper, although with a different colour scheme.
