This first catalogue was for the sale of his collection of books and manuscripts relating to travel, which comprised 500 lots and was sold on 7 April 2004 (the other sales were of Keynes\u2019 natural history books (part II, 8 April 2004), his collection of modern literature (part III, 8 April 2004), and a final sale of works from all fields (part IV), which took place on 22 September 2004). The catalogue is prefaced by a memoir of Keynes by his nephew Simon Keynes \u2013 the author of&nbsp;<em>Quentin Keynes. Explorer, Film-Maker, Lecturer and Book-Collector 1921-2003<\/em>&nbsp;(Cambridge, 2004) \u2013 and it is divided into sections on \u2018Voyages\u2019, \u2018The Atlantic\u2019, \u2018The Americas\u2019, \u2018Australasia and Polynesia\u2019, \u2018The Indian Ocean\u2019, \u2018The Middle East and Asia\u2019, \u2018Richard Burton\u2019, and \u2018Africa\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2710_02.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2710_02.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2710_02-233x300.jpeg 233w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2710_02-272x350.jpeg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Book Collector<\/em>\u2019s reviewer commented that the \u2018catalogues were handsome and thorough\u2019 (vol. 55 (2004), pp. 256-262, at p. 256), and this first&nbsp;catalogue was particularly notable for the wealth of material by and about Sir Richard Burton (lots 213-306). Keynes had assembled the most important collection of Burton\u2019s manuscripts in private hands, which formed the basis of Keynes\u2019 Roxburghe Club book&nbsp;<em>The Search for the Source of the Nile<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 1999) and was subsequently acquired by the British Library.
