(Extremities minimally rubbed, small light mark on upper joint, bookblock very slightly leant, small mark on upper pastedown offsetting onto front free endpaper, dustwrapper minimally rubbed at edges, head of rear flap very lightly spotted and creased.) Farrell has created a brilliant and memorable character in Boris. An ageing cynic, touching and turbulent, and an arid English seaside resort are brought effortlessly to life and idiosyncrasy. The strength and versatility of J.G. Farrell\u2019s prose makes of Boris, his disasters and desolation, an intense and living world of comedy and pathos\u2019 (dustwrapper blurb). Farrell was at the time, as the author profile on the rear dustwrapper flap explains, \u2018living in the United States on a Harkness Fellowship. [\u2026] The&nbsp;<em>Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;described Farrell as \u201can exuberantly gifted writer\u201d with \u201csure signs of the developing powers of a considerable talent\u201d\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Farrell-Girl-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Farrell-Girl-2.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Farrell-Girl-2-201x300.jpeg 201w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Farrell-Girl-2-234x350.jpeg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Times<\/em>&nbsp;reviewed the book with bemusement about its \u2018typographical eccentricities \u2013 in appearance rather like the Mouse\u2019s Tale in&nbsp;<em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em>\u2019 but concluded that this was \u2018more than compensated for by the comedy, by the sharpness of observation, and by the&nbsp;almost Nabokovian obsession with minutiae\u2019 (17 August 1967, p. 5).&nbsp;<em>A Girl in the Head<\/em>&nbsp;was published at 22<em>s.&nbsp;<\/em>6<em>d<\/em>., and later states of the dustwrapper have been clipped to remove this printed price, which is replaced with a price-sticker on the upper flap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J.G. Farrell, the Anglo-Irish prize-winning novelist of the 1960s and 1970s, is best known for his Empire Trilogy.
