Half-tone frontispieces to each no., and half-tone and line illustrations in the text after Sidney Paget, Warwick Goble,&nbsp;<em>et al<\/em>. (Occasional light&nbsp;marks, occasional light spotting, mainly affecting the margins, small adhesive mark on final p. of index.) Contemporary black&nbsp;<em>moir\u00e9<\/em>&nbsp;cloth, boards ruled in blind, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, all edges speckled red. [252]) \u2013 which testify to Conan Doyle\u2019s \u2018enduring fascination with delinquent behaviour\u2019 (A. Lycett,&nbsp;<em>Conan Doyle: The Man who Created Sherlock Holmes<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 2007), p. [265]). These studies were presumably written, in part, to satisfy a public who had mourned the death of Sherlock Holmes in \u2018The Final Problem\u2019 some eight years earlier, and, like the Sherlock Holmes stories, \u2018Strange Studies from Life\u2019 were illustrated with 14 drawings by Sidney Paget, two of which were the full-page frontispiece to nos 124 and 125.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_02.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_02-350x249.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_02-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_02-492x350.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of these studies, \u2018The Holocaust of Manor Place\u2019, was the story of \u2018a multiple murder in Walworth by a man who hoped to defraud an insurance company. The second, \u201cThe Love Affair of George Vincent Parker\u201d, was about a young man in the Midlands who murdered his girlfriend after she had turned her affections elsewhere. Although sentenced to hang, Parker (actually George Victor Townley) was found insane and sent to an asylum. The third, \u201cThe Debatable Case of Mrs. Emsley\u201d, looked back on the murder of a wealthy widow in the East End of London\u2019 (<em>op. cit<\/em>., pp. [265]-266). Conan Doyle had intended the series to comprise twelve cases, but only these three appeared, and Conan Doyle wrote to the editor of&nbsp;<em>The Strand<\/em>&nbsp;that \u2018I don\u2019t think I ever felt more uncertain about anything. However since they have gone out to be illustrated let it stand, but I will write no more until we see how these seem to go\u2019 (quoted in Green and Gibson, p. 342), and he was also working on the book in which he resurrected his popular detective \u2013&nbsp;<em>The Hound of the Baskervilles<\/em>, which would be serialised in the following volumes of&nbsp;<em>The Strand<\/em>. The three \u2018Strange Studies from Life\u2019 were not issued in book form for six decades, until they were edited by Paul Ruber for publication by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Literary Society in 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"517\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_03.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_03-350x241.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_03-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/2867_03-508x350.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This volume also includes \u2018A British Commando: An Interview with Conan Doyle\u2019 (pp. [633]-640), an article by Captain Philip Trevor, a Surrey neighbour and cricketing friend of Conan Doyle. The article discusses the Undershaw Rifle Club and Conan Doyle\u2019s efforts to establish a militia similar to the Boer commandos, which he explained was \u2018run [&#8230;] on the most democratic lines. All riflemen are equal\u2019 (p. 636). The article is illustrated with eight photographs by Trevor \u2013 including one of \u2018Conan Doyle as Field Cornet\u2019, which shows him firing a rifle \u2013 and it was published with \u2018Strange Studies from Life\u2019 in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Literary Society edition of 1963. The other articles in this volume include Alfred Dreyfus\u2019s \u2018My Life on Devil\u2019s Island\u2019 (p. [521]-529), recounting his imprisonment following the notorious miscarriage of justice which he suffered and which Conan Doyle would later compare to that inflicted upon George Edalji in his article \u2018The Case of Mr. George Edalji.
