Eliot<\/em>&nbsp;in 1984, a year before his death.&nbsp;Sir John Betjeman had been appointed Poet Laureate in 1972 and&nbsp;the University of Hull, where Larkin had held the position of Librarian since 1955, awarded Betjeman an honorary DLitt in July 1973. At the ceremony Larkin \u2013 who \u2018was loyal to the work and example of&nbsp;John Betjeman, with whom he formed a mutual admiration society\u2019 (ODNB)&nbsp;\u2013 read his \u2018On John Betjeman: A Citation\u2019, which opens with the words \u2018[i]t is not easy to sum up in a few minutes the achievement of a man of such celebrated and individual quality as Sir John Betjeman, and the task is made no lighter by the frivolous spanners Sir John himself has from time to time seen fit to throw into the machinery of assessment\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although \u2018A Citation\u2019 was \u2018issued for the ceremony itself in a 3ff. mimeographed form\u2019, its appearance in this issue of&nbsp;<em>Encounter&nbsp;<\/em>constitutes the first publication of the text (<em>cf<\/em>. Bloomfield C426; the text also subsequently appeared in the&nbsp;<em>University of Hull Gazette<\/em>&nbsp;vol.
