{"id":7816,"date":"2023-10-14T17:18:44","date_gmt":"2023-10-14T17:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/?p=7816"},"modified":"2023-10-14T17:18:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T17:18:45","slug":"the-autograph-collection-of-margaret-elizabeth-keynes-nee-darwin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/14\/the-autograph-collection-of-margaret-elizabeth-keynes-nee-darwin\/","title":{"rendered":"The Autograph Collection of Margaret Elizabeth Keynes (n\u00e9e Darwin)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">In 2020, we facilitated the institutional acquisition of a remarkable collection under the Acceptance in Lieu scheme: the collection of autograph letters and manuscripts formed by Margaret Elizabeth Keynes (1890-1974) \u2013 the youngest daughter of Sir George Howard Darwin and the granddaughter of Charles Darwin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Assembled over the course of seven decades, this collection started with manuscripts which the nine-year-old Margaret Darwin gathered from her father\u2019s correspondence in 1899 \u2013 including letters by scientific luminaries such as Charles Darwin (which document his daughter Henrietta Darwin\u2019s role as an editor of his works), and T.H. Huxley (\u2018Darwin\u2019s Bulldog\u2019), who illustrated one letter with a caricature depicting Darwin as a scientific saint attracting pilgrims from far and wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:0px\">Assembled over the course of seven decades, the collection started with manuscripts which the nine-year-old Margaret Darwin accumulated from her father\u2019s correspondence in 1899 \u2013 including letters by scientific luminaries such as Charles Darwin (which document his daughter Henrietta Darwin\u2019s role as an editor of his works), and T.H. It is a rich resource which provides new and apparently unpublished letters by Darwin, and a very large number of manuscripts by and about his wife, their children, and their&nbsp;grandchildren, illuminating the domestic and professional lives of Emma Darwin, Sir George Darwin, Francis Darwin, Gwen Raverat, and others across two centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">After Margaret Keynes\u2019 death in 1974 her autograph collection passed to her son Stephen John Keynes OBE, FLS (1927-2017), the founder and chairman of the Charles Darwin Trust, whose executors sought the advice of Type &amp; Forme. The collection has now joined the world-leading Darwin collections of Cambridge University Library.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right has-sitebg-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#0d5588\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-sitebg-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#0d5588;font-size:18px\"><br>I am delighted that this important collection, so carefully put together and preserved by my grandmother, can now be studied by scholars for the first time, and in the context of Cambridge\u2019s remarkable Darwin collections.
