Original burgundy cloth gilt, upper board lettered in gilt and with border of double blind rules, spine divided into compartments by blind rules and lettered in gilt in 2, top edges stained red, textured grey paper dustwrapper lettered in blue. (Spine slightly leant, extremities minimally rubbed and bumped, dustwrapper with a few light marks and slightly rubbed and creased at edges.) As the author\u2019s great-great-grandson Gerald Charles Dickens wrote, Charles Dickens \u2018was extremely protective of&nbsp;<em>The Life of Our Lord<\/em>. He was well aware that anything from his pen would be snapped up, published, distributed, and then become part of the Dickens legend; he was determined that this one work would receive no such treatment. When Charles Dickens said that&nbsp;<em>The Life of Our Lord<\/em>&nbsp;was purely for family, he meant it\u2019 (Charles Dickens,&nbsp;<em>The Life of Our Lord. Written for his Children during the Years 1846-1849<\/em>&nbsp;(New York, 1999),<em>&nbsp;<\/em>p. 7). The manuscript was closely guarded within the Dickens family, and on Charles Dickens\u2019s death in 1870 it passed to Georgina Hogarth (his sister-in-law) and from her to Sir Henry Fielding Dickens. In his will, Sir Henry \u2013 the last surviving child of the author \u2013 bequeathed the manuscript to his wife and children, with the instruction that they should decide by a vote whether to deposit the manuscript at the British Museum or publish it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2259_04.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7867\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2259_04.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2259_04-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2259_04-243x350.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the death of Sir Henry in 1933, his family decided that&nbsp;<em>The Life of Our Lord&nbsp;<\/em>should be published, and sold the world publication rights to Associated Newspapers Limited for \u00a340,000. The book appeared serially in&nbsp;<em>The Daily Mail<\/em>from 5 March to 17 March 1934, and was also syndicated internationally (according to Smith, it appeared \u2018simultaneously in nearly two hundred different newspapers in America\u2019). This first edition in book form was published on 15 May 1934 in two bindings: the standard cloth binding (as here) at 3<em>s<\/em>. 6<em>d<\/em>. and the deluxe, leather binding at 7<em>s<\/em>. 6<em>d<\/em>.
