Original black cloth, upper board blocked in blind with publisher\u2019s device, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, printed map on upper endpapers, lower endpapers plain, dustwrapper designed by James MacDonald, not price-clipped. (Extremities a little rubbed, chipped, and bumped, dustwrapper marked, edges creased and torn causing small losses.) Stanley\u2019s Triumph and Disaster<\/em>&nbsp;and then published the following year in this edition as&nbsp;<em>Dr. Livingstone, I Presume<\/em>. Casada judged it a \u2018solid study based on fairly extensive research, some of which is in manuscript materials. Not a full biography but a detailed analysis of his search for, finding of, and ensuing debate on Livingstone. Quite good on Stanley\u2019s early life and succeeds in dispelling at least some of the mystery surrounding these years. One of the better works on Stanley\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Anstruther_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Anstruther_01.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Anstruther_01-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.typeandforme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Anstruther_01-272x350.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This copy was formerly in the noted collection&nbsp;of the explorer and bibliophile Quentin Keynes, who travelled extensively in Africa throughout the second half of the twentieth century, and collected a remarkable library of books and manuscripts relating to the exploration of Africa, particularly during the nineteenth century. Some of these works provided the basis for Keynes\u2019s Roxburghe Club book&nbsp;<em>The Search for the Source of the Nile: Correspondence between Captain Richard Burton, Captain John Speke and Others, from Burton\u2019s Unpublished East African Letter Book; together with Other Related Letters and Papers<\/em>&nbsp;(London, 1999) and his collection was also a resource that he drew upon for his own travels in Africa. It was also a resource for writer and scholars studying Stanley and the history of African exploration, including Tim Jeal who used material from \u2018Quentin Keynes\u2019s unique African collection\u2019 in his&nbsp;<em>Stanley<\/em>&nbsp;(p. 477).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liniger-Goumaz and Hellinga,&nbsp;<em>Stanley<\/em>, 549;&nbsp;<em>cf<\/em>.
