Original printed dark-blue or light-blue wrappers with monochrome portrait of Lawrence after Augustus John on upper wrapper (vol. 26, no. 2-vol. 29, no. 2) and printed white wrappers with colour-printed portrait of Lawrence after Colin Gill on upper wrapper (vol. 30, no. 1-vol. 34, no. 1). (A few light marks, some wrappers slightly creased or bumped at edges.) A very good set. Provenance: Peter Danby-Smith (acquired from the Society through subscription).
First editions. The Journal of the T.E. Lawrence Society was intended to complement the Society’s Newsletter and to provide a platform for scholarly articles on Lawrence. The first issue was published in spring 1991 and it has appeared biannually since then, gathering scholarship on Lawrence, his times, life and work in accordance with the Society’s mission, ‘to promote and publish research into the life and works of T. E. Lawrence […][,] to advance the education of the public in the life and works of T. E. Lawrence and to promote research (and to publish the useful results thereof) into his life and works’.
This unbroken series of 17 issues includes an obituary of Jeremy Wilson (who was the Chairman of the T.E. Lawrence Society from September 1990 to September 1994 and had played a leading role in the foundation of The Journal of the T.E. Lawrence Society, serving as its first editor), accompanied by ‘An Appreciation’ by Joe Berton and ‘A Tribute’ by Peter Metcalfe (vol. 27, no. 1); Malcolm Brown’s ‘T.E. Lawrence by his Friends’ (vol. 27, no. 2); Iona Glenn’s ‘Gender and Orientalism in the Photography of T.E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell’ (vol. 28, no. 2); Lorraine Tinsley’s ‘T.E. Lawrence and Leonard Woolley in Carchemish: The Story behind the Photograph’ (vol. 29, no. 2); Philip Neale’s ‘T.E.
