We are Mark James and Anke Timmermann, two Fellows of the Linnean Society who have researched, dealt with, and published on materials relating to the history of natural history from the 15th to the 21st century for many years.

Mark worked at Christie’s and Sotheby’s before moving to Henry Sotheran Ltd and then Bernard Quaritch Ltd. He has worked on a number of major natural history collections, and published catalogues dedicated to the work of Charles Darwin and Margaret Mee. Anke is a historian of science (PhD Cantab) and had an international career as a historian, writer, and bibliographer (most recently as Munby Fellow at Cambridge University Library) before joining the antiquarian book trade at Bernard Quaritch Ltd in 2014, specialising, among other things, in travel and natural history.

We established Type & Forme in 2018, upon our joint expertise in the field of rare books and manuscripts of some 50 years. In addition to finding rare books, manuscripts, and prints, researching their history, and then finding new homes for them, we write bibliographies, publish on the history of the book and of collections, and curate exhibitions.
