Sometimes considered as forming a trilogy with Midnight’s Children (1981) and The Satanic Verses (1988), Shame is a magic realist account of Pakistan, which addresses the country’s turbulent history since Partition and its creation in 1947 through its narrative and the narrator’s autobiographical interjections.
