HUGHES, Edward (‘Ted’) James (editor). New Poetry 6. London: The Anchor Press Ltd for Hutchinson in association with the Arts Council of Great Britain and PEN, 1980.

Octavo (215 x 133mm), pp. 217, [1 (blank)]. Original ochre boards by Wm Brendon & Son Ltd, spine lettered and decorated in silver, dustwrapper, not price-clipped. (Top edges slightly spotted, dustwrapper slightly faded on spine and slightly creased at edges). A very good copy.

First edition. The Arts Council anthology New Poetry had first appeared in 1975, and this sixth volume in the series was edited by Hughes, whose work had previously appeared in New Poetry 2 (1976). Previous volumes had always been the work of two editors, but the choice of 135 poems from the 4,000 submitted for New Poetry 6 was Hughes’s alone, and it included pieces by Alan Brownjohn, Gavin Ewart, U.A. Fanthorpe, Elaine Feinstein, Michael Horowitz, James Kirkup, Peter Redgrove, Penelope Shuttle, Jon Silkin, and Jon Stallworthy.

Sagar and Tabor, Ted Hughes, B104.
