Undoubtedly one of our most compelling experiences of the past few years has been the authentication of the recovered Darwin Notebooks at Cambridge University Library.

Charles Darwin’s ‘Notebook B’ and ‘Notebook C’, which are fundamental in Darwin’s development of the theory of evolution, had disappeared more than 20 years before they safely returned to Cambridge University Library in March 2022. They were returned after the University Librarian, Dr Jessica Gardner, launched a worldwide appeal. We were honoured to contribute to the collaborative effort – which included a number of libraries as well as the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) – by authenticating the notebooks.
